Legend has it that early settlers bought the piece of land known as Rumson from the Natives for some rum. But as far back as 1663, long before the area was officially named Rumson, Natives called it "Navarumsunk". Over the years it has been shortened to "Rumson".
Rumson was purchased by English settlers in pieces. The first purchase is dated January 25, 1665, and it included parts of Middletown. The rest of the area was purchased April 7, 1665 and June 5, 1665.
There are many old, historic homes in Rumson, but the oldest is the 700-acre Treadwell House, named after a family that summered here for almost 100 years. It is the second oldest building in Monmouth County, and dates back to 1670.
Residents of Rumson in the 19th Century enjoyed many activities, such as swimming in the river, the Atlantic Ocean, or taking a wagon ride. In winter, they used the river for ice-boating.
Originally a summer colony for wealthy New Yorkers, Rumson today can be said to be an upscale suburb of New York. Many of Rumson's residents work in the financial services industry and commute to Wall Street on the high speed ferry that leaves from nearby Atlantic Highlands. The ferry ride is 35 minutes to the foot of Wall Street or slightly less than an hour to Midtown Manhattan. Transportation to New York is also available via New Jersey Transit train service from Red Bank.
Rumson has always been a very affluent area. In fact, it is still one of the wealthiest towns in New Jersey. The homes are spectacularly large, many with private yachts anchored in the Navesink River, which serves as their backyard. You will find beautiful large estates as well as quaint century homes.
Locals enjoy the beautiful beaches just over the Oceanic Bridge, as well as a quick commuter ferry to downtown Manhattan. Many fine eating establishments such as the Salt Creek Grille and Fromagerie make Rumson an ideal place to visit, any time of the year.
Rumson Country Club founded in 1908 boasts a well-maintained 18 hole golf course and other amenities such as croquet, platform tennis, 30+ slip marina, swimming pool, tennis, trap and skeet shooting. The recently rebuilt Riverhouse with exceptional views of the Shrewsbury River is a perfect place for members and their families.
Rumson is one of the most exclusive residential communities on the New Jersey Shore. It is situated on a picturesque peninsula overlooking the ocean and lies between the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers. Rumson boasts beautiful luxury estates as well as lovely waterfront homes. Blessed with this unique location, the Rumson Peninsula is obviously an attractive site and has retained much of it's natural beauty.
